Probably the best know and best loved from T. S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, Macavity has been illustrated in the perfect way to convey the humour of the poem.
This is one of those poems that just begs to be read aloud. The rhythm, bounce and repetition have everyone joining in and quickly learning sections- Macavity’s not there. The poem is infectious and children love the sound of words like bafflement, levitation, depravity, adding them to their vocabulary.
What really makes this version successful are the illustrations. They capture this loveable rogue’s antics perfectly, making the poem accessible to younger children and entertaining the more mature amongst us too. I love the blood hound detective who is constantly foiled by the ‘Napoleon of Crime’. The glimpse of a tail or a paw disappearing from the scene of the crime lets the reader in on the secret, but is somehow never spotted by the hapless hound!
