A hibernating bear is joined by a series of animals sheltering from a snow storm. A mouse lights a fire and is then joined by a hare who makes tea and pops some corn. A badger then joins them with enough honey nuts to share. The animals are then joined by a gopher, a mole a wren and a raven and then the party really gets going! Meanwhile the bear snores on. Unfortunately, mouse seasons a stew with too much pepper and this makes the bear sneeze and wake up. The bear really does wake up with a sore head but he is only upset because he was missing the party with his friends. The friends then have a wonderful time sharing their food until they all fall asleep except that is for the bear.
Karma Wilson's charming story is written in rhyming couplets and it has a rhythm that is easily remembered. This makes it fun to read repeatedly so that children can join in and put in actions. This could easily be used in KS 1 to explore rhyme. The illustrations by Jane Chapman beautifully express the joy of these friends enjoying a party out of the cold.
