A Wisp of Wisdom

On Wednesday, I made my way to Oxford after work for the launch of 'A Wisp of Wisdom' at Blackwells. This book is the result of an amazing project which we posted about previously. That post can be found here

Folklore, folk tales, traditional tales- whatever you wish to call them- from anywhere are something which I really enjoy so this collection was going to be an essential addition to my bookshelves.

Oxford was looking particularly festive as I made my way through the town to Broad Street where there was a Christmas market in full flow!

Even Dobby had caught the Christmas spirit!

The atmosphere inside Blackwells was just as exciting! One of our 'Brilliant Bookshops' (post found here, it is always a great delight to visit the shop and browse their wonderful selection of books! I managed to spend quite a bit before the event began!

'A Wisp of Wisdom' is a wonderful collection of tales from Cameroon, re-told by some amazing authors and a lovely crowd of people of all ages had gathered to celebrate its launch and find out more about this incredible project which started when a conservation research team in central Africa collected folk tales from their local chiefs and elders.

Speaking passionately about the importance of preserving the rich tradition of story telling by recording these tales for future generations, encouraging the locals to protect rather than hunt their amazing wildlife and wanting to give copies of the book to school children who have nothing to read, Tom Moorhouse introduced us to the book and those behind it.

Lantana, the publishing house behind the project, are so committed to publishing books from all cultures and traditions, allowing everyone to see themselves reflected in stories, and they have worked tirelessly to turn the idea into a 'proper book'! And what a book...

Those gathered were treated to readings by some of the authors present from their contributions- Gill Lewis, Piers Torday, Abi Elphinstone and Sarah Lean all read tantalising extracts.

The illustrator, Emmie van Biervliet, was also at the launch and it was such a pleasure to meet her. Her pictures really add to the magical feel of the book.
