LONGLISTED FOR THE NORTH SOMERSET TEACHERS' BOOK AWARD MOVING ON CATEGORY
We all read books for different reasons...some really make you think, some make you cry, some fill you with hope...this one does all three!
Having battled cancer for many years, Mark is faced with the awful fact that the disease is back. So he runs away.
Taking his dog, Beau, with him, Mark makes what he thinks will be his final journey to the top of Mount Rainier, a place his grandfather had said they would reach together. But things don't go according to plan.
The reader is allowed to see the story as it unfolds, not only through Mark's eyes as he makes his journey, but also from the viewpoint of those he has left behind- his parents and his best friend, Jessie, who knows the truth about where Mark is and what he has decided to do, but doesn't want to break Mark's confidence.
Without wishing to give too much away, what I love most about this book is the realisation that Mark comes to about the importance of life- how it is to be savoured and enjoyed; how kindness can be found in the most unlikely of places; how people often have reserves of strength they little know they have. Each person he meets along his journey has an effect on how he views life, even if he doesn't realise it at the time.
A very thought provoking story that will move you to tears in places, but will leave you feeling hopeful and seeing joy in the little things again. Perfect for children looking for that 'moving on' challenge!
