LONGLISTED FOR THE NORTH SOMERSET TEACHERS' BOOK AWARD READ ALOUD CATEGORY
Book Title: The Deadly 7
Author & Illustrator: Garth Jennings
Publisher: Macmillan Children’s Books
Do you believe in the seven deadly sins: Pride, Envy, Wrath, Greed, Gluttony, Lust & Sloth? What if those sins were miraculously transformed into monsters- would you believe in them then? Nelson, the hero of our story, finds himself in just such a position! However, his Deadly 7 turn out to be the very best companions especially when he is called to set out on an adventure of monstrous proportions!
Nelson’s sister has mysteriously disappeared and he will stop at nothing to get her back; ridiculous disguises, aircraft journeys half way around the world- even the Brazilian rainforest won’t stand in his way!
This book is a fast paced adventure with just a touch of craziness. In the words of Nelson regarding his own story… ‘It was as though someone has taken reality, made it into a jigsaw, thrown the jigsaw on to the floor and then said, ‘Now, hurry up and put it all together!’ as they danced all over the pieces in a clown suit, blowing a trumpet!’ Thank goodness Nelson has his monsters to help him out. They may be ugly, smelly and grumpy, but they are loyal and willing to go to any lengths to help Nelson get his sister back.
There are so many possibilities for using this in the classroom. Researching the seven deadly sins and the creation of readers' own monsters, for example. Investigating the history and architecture of St Paul’s Cathedral further- the setting of the creation of Nelson’s monsters- would also be really interesting. The latter half of the story is set in the Brazil and with the summer focus on the Olympics in Rio, this would be a very timely read!
A story that is a real feast for the imagination, a riotous read aloud that will have children rolling with laughter! Garth Jennings is known as a fabulous screenplay writer and now he has transferred these skills to children’s literature. This book has epic written all over it!
