HAPPY WORLD HONEY BEE DAY

I know this is a bumble bee, but I couldn't get a honey bee to pose for me!

I know this is a bumble bee, but I couldn't get a honey bee to pose for me!

What better book could there 'bee' to mark this day?! This story is a fantastic celebration of everything these amazing insects do.

For every plant and flower you see

Was given life by one small bee.

Patricia Hegarty's simple rhyming text follows Bee on her journey through the day as she and her hive-mates prove that they are 'Nature's tiny miracle'.

Britta Teckentrap's lovely illustrations are enhanced by hexagonal cut-outs throughout the book, allowing the reader to peep through. The range of art techniques used in this book are a gift to teachers (and others) who could use this text as a starting point for work in many areas. Different types of printing, collage, rubbings, die-cutting could all be used in the classroom to create scenes from Bee's life.

The science possibilities the book offers are self-evident. But what a beautiful way of engaging children with this insect before (or after) looking at the real thing?
