Today is my father's birthday! I am lucky enough to have had a very loving, supportive dad who has always been there and has always done his best for my brothers and me. Sadly, not everyone is as fortunate.
In celebration of his birthday, here is one of the most poignant and beautiful books about fathers that I know. It's not about me and him- it's a wonderful story exploring the relationship between a father and son, inspired by the author's own.
'FArTHER' by Grahame Baker-Smith is a beautiful book, both in content and illustration. A boy's father is consumed by a dream which sometimes takes him over completely ...
'Such a busy, bossy dream that it would not leave him alone.'
At other times, he would be the perfect father, playing, teaching and sharing with his son, but it never lasted- 'We would be together until the dream of flying returned.'
When the father goes off to war, the dream passes to his son who keeps it alive and succeeds in flying, making a few simple adjustments to his father's wings. The book concludes with the boy (now a father himself) wondering whether his own son will chase the same dream.
This book offers so many possibilities for discussion of a range of topics, but especially father son relationships.
