North and South...

This term, we have had two JAB meetings; our usual meeting in the north of county and our new meeting in the south. DOUBLE the book talk, double the biscuits- who could ask for more?!

The books we have been discussing this term are 'The Secret of Nightingale Wood' by Lucy Strange and 'Over the Line' by Tom Palmer.

Both books caused much discussion. Most of both groups loved 'Nightingale Wood', enjoying its slightly 'old-fashioned' feel and rich language. Some felt it would appeal far more to girls than boys, but agreed it would make a good quality text for older children.

The group agreed that 'Over the Line' would be great for engaging reluctant readers- particularly those with an interest in history and football. It was felt that this would be a great book for using sections of for KS2 or in its entirety for KS3. A review by one of our KS3 pupils will follow soon!

We also looked at a couple of books and how we would use them for guided reading. There were lots of ideas and suggestions which we will be posting on our Members' section soon. Both books were very popular with the group!

At the next meeting, we have decided to read 'Rabbit and Bear The Pest in the Nest' by Julian Gough and Jim Field (reviewed here), 'Wed Wabbit' by Lissa Evans and 'Cogheart' by Peter Bunzl (reviewed here).

Everybody is welcome to either meeting! I will email dates out soon, but please email us at if you are not a member, but would like to come!
