The Chinese Zodiac follows a cycle of twelve years, with each year being represented by a different animal. This year is the year of the Rooster and those born under this sign are very observant, out-going and loyal.
There are different versions of the story which tells how the years were named after different creatures. Some versions tell of a great race between them; 'The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac' tells of how Buddha invited all the animals of China to visit him and the order in which they arrived.
The illustrations resemble Chinese woodcuts and are intensely coloured. At the end of the book, there is a section explaining the qualities of each zodiac sign. This is a great introduction to the story behind the Chinese Zodiac and could be used as a great starting point for exploring this festival.
