Maggie Aderin-Pocock at the Bath Festival

I am not known for my love of space. There is simply too much of it and it scares me! So I was a bit nervous about what this session would be like...

It was amazing! Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock is such an inspiring and enthusiastic speaker that I am now looking at space with new eyes! Her knowledge is incredible and I found myself understanding things that I thought had been made up for Red Dwarf!

Perhaps it was her love of the Clangers which first sparked my interest! I never thought a 'real' space scientist would enjoy something so wacky! Soon she was talking about the constellations and telling us some of the stories behind them- Cassiopeia, Andromeda, Perseus- merging the myths of ancient Greece with facts about the stars. Her knowledge seemed limitless- as limitless as space itself!

She sent a clear message throughout her talk as well- 'Each and every one of us should reach for the stars!'

The DK book, 'Star Finder for Beginners: A Step-be-Step Guide to the Night Sky', which she has written the forward to, is a beautifully presented book, packed full of interesting information. I really recommend it for anyone unsure about space- or anyone fascinated by it!

(Apologies for the photos- I only had my phone with me).
