There used to be more of us. I'm certain of this.
I am not known for my love of scary things- quite the opposite, in fact. However, several years ago, when I was constantly looking for books I thought my son might enjoy, I came across this one- 'The Hunt' by Andrew Fukuda- and I loved it, scary bits and all!
Since birth, Gene has been drilled by his father with the rules that will keep him alive. Don't smile, laugh or giggle; don't make friends; don't fall asleep in class... the list seems endless, but essential if he is to survive as a human in a world where humans- known as 'hepers' - are seen as a delicacy.
Suddenly thrust into the limelight after his number comes up in the lottery to take part in a Heper Hunt, Gene finds himself in the most precarious position.
A very tense read, 'The Hunt' keeps you on the edge of your seat, constantly tightening its grip as you turn the pages as quickly as you can. The fifteen year old I was trying to interest just had to wait until I had finished!
There are many similarities between the 'people' and 'vampires' although they are never referred to as such. They sleep upside down, have fangs, disintegrate in sunlight and yet, Andrew Fukuda has given them unique characteristics. They don't need to drink water, they don't sweat and for weeks after reading I was nervous around people scratching their wrists as this is how people show they are laughing!
Gene's sense of isolation and his constant struggle to pretend to be something he is not to survive are very strong throughout the series and for me, this was what made the first book so compelling. Once into the trilogy, I just had to find out what was going to happen- and it wasn't what I was expecting!
Gene's story is compelling andcontinues through two more equally exciting books as he tries to evade capture and help the other 'hepers' he has encountered along the way. No longer alone, he finds new purpose- but it is hard to say too much about what happens without giving too much away so I would simply say- read them all; you won't be disappointed!
