Happy World Book Day!

It has been such a lovely day! FULL of books, smiles and stories...

The day started with me painting black circles round my eyes and the end of my nose! Quite normal behaviour in the life a of teacher! Once I had put on my ears and picked my my tray of doughnuts, I was ready for action as Mr Panda, one of my favourite Steve Antony characters!

One of the things I love most about World Book Day is the buzz in the staff room as the teachers gather for morning briefing. Today, we were joined by the whole packet of crayons who quit (or came home!), witches, wicked queens, a Wally or two, Peter Pan and his shadow- teachers are so creative and never fail to rise to the challenge of dressing up for this occasion!

And then in come the children! So many ideas- so many costumes! Characters from 'Wolf Brother' (our class book) arrived along with Little Red Riding Hoods, cats, witches and wizards... characters from Dr Seuss, from Roald Dahl, from Harry Potter, from fairy tales, from nursery rhymes, from the classics... the hall was full of such a variety of costumes when we went for assembly- it was wonderful!

'Dog Loves Books' was our story for assembly which set the tone of the day beautifully- books are for sharing!

And share them we did! Many classes read the picture books which are on the short list for the Children's Book Awards. We had story sessions at lunch time and during the afternoon when all the children met with their reading buddies and spent time reading together.

After school, we had a Story Session with hot chocolate, popcorn, craft activities- and more stories! As well as 'Please Mr Panda', I chose 'I Don't Want Curly Hair' by Laura Ellen Anderson to read to my groups. All the children I read it to LOVED it- and so did I!

They joined in with great enthusiasm as I was asked to read it again- and again- and again!

It was such a good day!
