National Empathy Day!

Frog loves green! And he loves hopping! As long as he is hopping and surrounded by green things, he is NOT grumpy. However, (Grumpy) Frog does not like other colours- particularly pink and tends to get grumpy when things don't go his way.

When Frog is grumpy AND mean to a perfectly nice pink bunny, it takes a 'surprisingly reasonable crocodile' to make him see the error of his ways.

I can't begin to tell you how much I love this grumpy frog! Could it be because he bears a startling resemblance to a certain man that I know..? ('Oi...Not grumpy! This is my resting face.')  Ed Vere's illustrations are pure genius! They appear so simple, yet add so much humour and personality to the story. Vivid colours leap (!) off the page, bringing the story to life.

'Empathy' means 'the ability to understand and share the feelings of another' and Grumpy Frog certainly comes to see the effect his behaviour is having on his friends and pink bunny. His ponderings ...'Who needs friends anyway?...Why won't anyone hop with me?... are perfect for starting discussions and developing understanding of both Frog's feelings and those of his friends. His very toddler-like behaviours can easily be related to many situations older children might find themselves in- often those on the playtime football pitch!

We all get grumpy at times- and different things will make different people grumpy. Understanding and managing our own feelings is so important to developing our relationships with others and finding our way through the world. Perhaps sharing a light-hearted look at Frog and his grumpy ways will help!
