Supernatural crime fighters, Billy Flint and Charley Steel, head to Scotland to help Sir Gordon Balfour, who has unwittingly released a mummy into Edinburgh's high society.
Leaving only a trail of sand and a few hieroglyphs behind him, the mummy robs the houses of the wealthy and Billy and Charley, who work for SCREAM (Supernatural Crimes, Rescues, Emergencies and Mysteries), must use all their skills to solve the mystery behind the mummy.
Charley and Billy are both strong characters in very different ways. Charley is a lady, but one who is determined to work, not wait to be married off. Billy belongs to a family of criminals; he, however, works on the other side of the law, using his ability to sense ghosts and spirits to help solve crime. The rapport between the rough and ready Billy and the intelligent, determined Charley is captured perfectly and they complement each other's talents, making them a convincing team. The fact that Charley is in a wheelchair is very well handled; her disability is not a defining feature of her character.
There are plenty of clues scattered throughout the story to help the reader to solve the mystery. The book works well as a detective story, but with the added interest of the spirit world. Short chapters help make this a good read aloud as it enables the teachers to keep a good pace and the attention of a class, creating the 'ahhhh!' sound effect when children realise they have to wait for the next chapter!
Plenty of humour and attention to historical detail make this a convincing read and there is action a-plenty with a few spooky moments thrown in for good measure! Andrew Beasley has created a series which will no doubt capture and hold the interest of readers looking for mystery and excitement! I look forward to their next adventure!
