Poppy is delighted that she is going to stay at Smuggler's Cove in Cornwall. Whilst trying to get away from her problems and her past, Poppy comes up against an old Cornish mystery to solve...
This story is brilliantly evocative of those long, beautiful summers of my childhood with an Enid Blyton-esque feel to it. It captures the excitement of those holidays (mine were in Devon, not Cornwall!) plus it has the Poppy Pym-ness of an adventure story that we have come to know and love.
As well as capturing a sense of place, Laura Wood does an excellent job of peppering the text with historical details so effortlessly that they are just part of the story. Cornwall and smugglers go hand in hand and this rich legacy forms a wonderful backdrop to the second mystery in the book.
Poppy remains a bright, resourceful heroine; she is brave and loyal to her friends, facing whatever comes her way with determination. I hope there are many more adventures to come for Poppy Pym and her friends!
