This book focuses on twenty well-known artists from Michelangelo to Warhol. A helpful timeline sets the scene for their place in history and a detailed glossary and index help the reader to navigate the book successfully.
Full of beautiful works of art, facts and 'How to...' hints, this is an amazing book for both the art lover and the art novice. After a brief introduction offering an overview of ancient art including cave paintings, Egyptian tomb paintings, the Terracotta Warriors and Greek sculptures, each artist has four pages devoted to them, placing them in the context of various art movements and looking at 'the big idea' behind their work and the challenges that they faced. A selection of their most famous works are also included.
Beautifully presented, 'Splat!' would make an excellent resource for a class/ school library both for research and for pleasure. The 'How to ...' sections encourage the reader to experiment and enjoy art.
The book focuses on mainly male, European artists, although the 'Movers and Shakers' section at the end does widen the range of styles and artists, encouraging further exploration into the world of art and for children to discover who they think are the most exciting artists of all time!
