Following her wonderful book about 'Women in Science', Rachel Ignotofsky has now turned her attention to 'Women in Sport'.
The collection contains a diverse range of athletes from all over the world. Each woman is given two pages; on the left, a very stylised portrait in Ignotofsky's unique style and on the right, a concise biography. Quotes and facts edge each page.
Some figures are famous names- Billie Jean King, Serena Williams, Clare Balding-but the challenges they faced are possibly less well known and make fascinating reading. Many stories are about those who have overcome social challenges as well as those of racism, sexism and personal circumstances. The passion for their support and the dedication and determination they have shown is inspirational.
The book also contains information about teams, pay and media statistics and a time line. It is a fascinating read- even for non-sporting types like me! With its colourful, quirky illustrations, it is as eye-catching as it is interesting and deserves a place on everyone's shelves alongside 'Women in Science'. I look forward to seeing which group of women will be added to the collection next.
