Responsible for some of the most intriguing and thought-provoking picture books available, David Wiesner was born today in 1956. He is only the second person ever to have won the Caldecott Medal three times and he has received three Caldecott Honors as well.
Flotsam is one of my favourites, a wordless story about a boy who finds an old fashioned camera washed up on a beach. There is so much to see and discuss on each page that all-ages are fascinated and engaged, asking and answering endless questions.
And this is the joy of his books! Wiesner makes the magical seem possible, stretches your imagination and encourages the unpredictable. In each book his art work is distinctive and bold, full of detail and wonder. His books are an absolute gift to any teacher, offering so much to explore and discuss. If you haven't already- try some!
