Since the death of his wife and son, Sorrow's father- Chancellor of Rhannon- is in a perpetual state of mourning, a state imposed on the rest of the nation. Sorrow has to govern in his place, constantly wishing things were different for her and for her country.
When things suddenly change, Sorrow has to choose whether to step aside or fight for her country. She finds herself in a precarious position, not sure who she can trust, as everything she has known changes.
I loved 'The Sin Eater's Daughter' series and so had high expectations of this book- and I was not disappointed! From the first page, I just had to keep reading until, bleary-eyed in the early hours of the morning, I closed it desperate to start the next one. There had better be a next one!
The plot is fast moving and full of twists that are unexpected and keep coming. Melinda Salisbury has created her world with great care, the history, culture and traditions all giving shape and substance to her imaginings. Similarly, each character has been fleshed out with faults and foibles as well as strengths, making them more believable. Sorrow is particularly well created, but my favourite has to be Luvian- I can't say why as I do not want to give anything away.
One for older readers, but certainly not limited to teen readers. There's so much to enjoy here!
