He's not tall or strong, but slight and pink. And he's very, very clever...
Meet Fabio the flamingo who lives in a small town on the banks of Lake Laloozee. Whilst at the Hotel Royale for a pink lemonade, Fabio and his great friend, Gilbert, get caught up in a great mystery as Julia, one of the entrants into a talent show, disappears.
Fabio is a detective to be reckoned with! In true Poirot style, he unmasks the criminal, coolly explaining away every detail, connecting all the dots and saving the day. His sidekick, Gilbert, is by his side throughout, offering to wear disguises and trying to help- reminding me of Hugh Fraser's portrayal of Hastings in the David Suchet Poirots.
The story is full of entertaining characters- all possible suspects in the case - and the plot bounds along with great energy, gathering momentum as it reaches its conclusion. With the popularity of detective fiction for older children- the 'Wells and Wong Mysteries', 'Ruby Redfort', the 'Sinclair's Mysteries', it is wonderful to see a satisfying, well-written version for younger readers- and one which will appeal equally to all readers!
The illustrations are wonderful- full of humour and vibrant colours, they accompany the text perfectly. Fluorescent pages add to the whimsical charm of the book, although for some children, this might make it harder to read! The large font and short chapters make it an achievable read that will appeal to newly independent readers- but also teachers seeking a fun class read!
I can't wait to find out what mystery Fabio has to solve next! Let's hope Gilbert has the chance to wear lots of disguises...
