"Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world."
This is the story of brave leaders, talented artists, gifted healers and scientists- it is the story of fifty women and girls who did extraordinary things. It is truly inspirational.
Organised into five different sections- Believe and Lead, Imagine and Create, Help and Heal, Think and Solve and Hope and Overcome- 'Herstory' gathers the women by theme rather than in chronological order, making it perfect for dipping in and out of. A timeline is included at the end of the book, allowing the reader to place a figure in 'herstory', but this is not as important as the inspirational role they played.
There are many familiar names here, but also some less well known. A double page spread is devoted to each woman, with photographs, illustrations and quotes, allowing the reader to familiarise themselves with women from a range of periods, cultures and countries. The book emphasises the significance of each, valuing and celebrating the contribution they made and the lessons that can be learned from their lives and experiences.
I have always been obsessed with history and as a child, used to scour libraries and bookshops for books about the women of history. I was always interested in the queens and the daughters, but had to hunt hard to find little information. Books like this are essential for all readers- not just girls- to allow those unheard stories to become as well-known as those of Ghandi, Churchill, Dickens, Brunel, Ramesses II and Martin Luther King.
