These four books tell of the adventures of Farmer Falgu, an Indian farmer. In the first book, he has had enough of his noisy farm and sets off in search of peace and quiet. Although this is not what he finds, he comes to realise that home is where he longs to be after all. The text is full of repetition and onomatopoeia- perfect for sharing and enjoying- and the gentle tale reminds us to appreciate what we have and where we live.
In his second adventure, Farmer Falgu sets off for market. When things go wrong, our cheery farmer does not despair, but makes omelettes to sell instead. Once again, this is a story to be enjoyed with added sound effects and musical accompaniments as the story builds to its conclusion. It could easily be acted out- with puppets or people!
Farmer Falgu’s third adventure takes him to the annual kite festival with his daughter, Eila. As usual, things do not go to plan, but the ever resourceful farmer comes up with a plan to save the day and bring everyone’s smile back. A note at the back of this book explains more about the kite festival and the traditions associated with it. Kite making and flying would be the perfect follow up to this lovely story- at home or at school!
Falgu’s fourth adventure takes him to the Kumbh Mela. His kindness to others prevents him from doing the things he wants to do, but by a series of lucky coincidences, everything turns out well in the end. The meaning of the Kunbh Mela is explained in a note at the back of the book, allowing adults to discover more and explain if needed to the children they are sharing the story with. Making some lassi and jalebis- or at least tasting some- seem an essential part of reading this story, encouraging children to share things they might be familiar with or try things they have never had before!
Each of these books is beautifully illustrated by Kanika Nair. The vibrant illustrations, full of colour and life, offer the reader a glimpse of the everyday life of those who live in India. The simple plots offer lots of opportunities for joining in and for adding musical accompaniments whilst showing us the best qualities of this gentle man. I loved learning more about the kite festival and Kumbh Mela and really look forward to seeing where Farmer Falgu’s adventures will take him next!
