We are SO EXCITED! It’s time for us to start our search for books for the North Somerset Teachers’ Book Awards 2019. It’s going to be our 5th award this year and we can’t quite believe it!
There are six categories: Picture Book, Read Aloud, Quality Fiction, Information, Poetry and Moving On.
Books must be published between 2017-2019. Voting is open to all teachers (whether they work in N Somerset or not) and we have had increasing numbers of votes each year. To vote, all books in a category must have been read by the person voting, but they do not have to vote in all categories.
Once voting has closed, the final votes are counted, then independently verified by someone who is not part of the group and is not in education.
There is no limit on the number of books which can be submitted for a category and submissions can be made to any or all of the categories. There is no fee for submitting books, but this year, we are asking that two copies of each title to be sent to the given address for books to be considered. This is because the panel reading and considering submissions this year has grown and it takes a while to pass the books round! Should you wish to submit a book, please contact us via the website or DM us on Twitter for the address the books need to be sent to. Submissions must be received by the 14th April 2019.
This year, the long list will be announced in on Saturday 13th July 2019 and will be shared on the website and via social media. We then review each title on the website. The short list will be announced on Saturday 7th September 2019 and again, this will be shared on our website and via social media, accompanied by out trademark pooch pictures which are so loved! The dates have changed from last year to allow more time for the panel to read the long listed books over the summer holidays.
The awards will be held in North Somerset on Saturday 9th November 2019 from 2.30- 5pm (date TBC) and all the winners will be announced via social media as the envelopes are opened! All short listed authors, illustrators and publishers are invited to attend and all those who voted or belong to member schools are invited as well, along with past winners. We encourage those on the short list to bring their families- and last year, three dogs came too! There is no fee for attending the awards and as we have no sponsorship or funding of any kind, we are not able to pay any expenses.
We are already having great fun browsing bookshops in our quest to find this year’s treasure! If you have any suggestions or would like to make a submission, please get in touch. The more, the merrier!
