Beaver's Big Adventure

Having left his home in the dam to set off on an adventure, Beaver suddenly realises that he is lost. Akita, the dog, offers him a ride home in a hot air balloon. But what does his home look like?

As they fly in the balloon, Akita asks Beaver what his home is like. They see many other homes on their journey and each of these is beautifully illustrated with cut through pictures, showing the animals that live there.

There is so much to see, enjoy and discuss in each illustration as the rhyming text tells of their conversation. Eventually, Beaver finds his way home and is able to tell everyone of his travels.

A map of the world at the end of the book shows where each creature- some familiar, some less well known- Beaver sees comes from with additional notes. The book would really lend itself to story telling, developing setting descriptions, lots of writing in different styles and artwork.

‘Beaver’s Big Adventure’ is a book to be read again and again, with lots of detailed pictures which are just delightful!

Al's Awesome Science

Meet twins Al and Lottie Boffin and their dog, Einstein. Al has decided to invent a time machine so he can go back and meet Great Grandpa Boffin and so is experimenting to find out what the best shape for this would be. Aided by his sister, their investigations are messy and often have unexpected results, but as a true scientist, Al is determined never to give up!

'Al's Awesome Science: Egg-speriments!' is a humorous, fun story which is also full of scientific facts and experiments to try. The reader is encouraged to explore the concepts investigated by the twins, but with the addition of some good advice to help avoid some of the mayhem caused in the story!

This is an excellent way of bringing science into the home and making it achievable for everyone. With 'Awesome Egg Facts' and 'Awesome Science Facts' scattered throughout, there is lots to learn whilst enjoying the story. Plenty of illustrations add to the fun! A great read!

Sky Private Eye

Sky Private Eye lives in Fairytale Town, where (when she's not detecting) she bakes cakes. When Little Red Riding Hood's Granny goes missing, Sky and Snuffle, her dog, are quickly on the case, locating the missing grandma and saving her from the Big Bad Wolf. Whipping up a batch of her special cupcakes turns the wolf from big baddie to bigfriendly and Sky Private Eye has accomplished her mission!

The illustrations are bright, lively and colourful. Each spread is full of details about life in Fairytale Town and the characters who live there. As Little Red, Sky and Snuffle zip along on Sky's scooter, they pass a Billy Goat whose collar bears the tag 'BIG', a frog wearing a crown and a gingerbread boy in running shoes. There is so much to talk about- so many other stories to tell!

Having saved the day (and Granny) with her Just-in-Time cupcakes, Sky returns to her baking. The book includes a recipe for vanilla wolf-print cupcakes at the back with clear instructions for how to make them. I haven't tried it out yet, but it's on my list of things to do!

This is a fun story with wonderful illustrations which would make a great read aloud for storytime! I am sure there will be many more cases for Sky Private Eye coming soon!
